Abstract
Background: The palate and nasal cavity are connected by the nasopalatine canal (NPC), a narrow, long channel in the front maxilla. For orthodontic planning, maxillofacial surgery, and dental implants, an accurate definition of NPC is essential since differences in it might affect treatment outcomes and raise the risk of complications.
Aim: This study aims to analyze the morphology and dimensions of NPC with cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT).
Materials and Methods: To analyze the morphology and dimension of NPC, 100 CBCT images were used in this study. NPC’s width and length were among the 5 linear measurements taken from the sagittal cross-section. According to Bronstein et al. classification given in CBCT coronal cross-sections, the NPC morphologies were divided into three groups. Age and gender influences on the measured dimension were evaluated. For statistical analysis, one-way analysis of variance, student independent t-test, and Chi-square test were employed.
Result: The study comprised 100 sample size having 47 males and 53 females with a mean age of 37.02 ± 13.41. The mean length for females and males was 11.34 and 10.91 mm in NPC, respectively. Type A was the most common type of canal configuration seen.
Conclusion: There are numerous variances in the NPC, and its size varies on the basis of age, gender, and dental health. To avoid difficulties, the maxilla should be radiologically assessed before undergoing any surgical treatments.
